A little bit of heaven...

A little bit of heaven in this beautiful corner of Devon. A friend had organised a long weekend camping in the middle of a rewilding project. I love camping but I do like to take a lot of creature comforts with me, and I didn’t think that I was going to find them here. particularly when I heard the words compost toilet – How wrong could I be?
The nature on your doorstep is breathtaking, a large area with wild flowers, birds and, if you’re lucky enough to see them, wild animals. Close enough to take morning coffee down to the lake.
But the camping is as luxurious as the nature is beautiful. The pitches perfectly level and free draining, the undercover washing up station has a plumbed sink with hot and cold running water.
But like me you’re probably thinking ‘but what about that compost toilet?’ Unbelievably it smells better any public toilet (well actually it just doesn’t smell) and the attached shower is better than mine at home, plus it comes with luxurious environmentally friendly products. So, in the middle of this effortless camping, it’s easy to forget that the wonderful hosts Angie and Sue, have taken care of your conscience when it comes to the environment. Sit back and enjoy and I’m sure like me you’ll be very sad to leave this paradise.

Peaceful and tranquil

What an amazing place to stay. From start to finish we couldn’t fault anything. The hosts were amazingly friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. The cabin was spotless and it had everything you needed. The surroundings were peaceful and tranquil. We would highly recommend a stay here!!

The pictures don't do it justice!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Brackenwood. The “Hedgehog Hideaway” cabin has everything you’d need and is situated in a beautiful plot of land: honestly, the pictures don’t do it justice. On top of this, the hosts Angie and Sue were wonderful. It’s clear they take a lot of pride in what they do: both in the quality of the amenities on-site and in the amazing job they’ve done rewilding the land. We’ll definitely be back if we’re ever visting Devon again.

As an added bonus, Angie and Sue have a few pygmy goats which they let us feed, which was an unexpected highlight of our trip.

Couldn't fault our stay...

The perfect idyllic getaway! Could not fault our stay in anyway, Angie and Sue our hosts were so friendly, and we also appreciated their knowledge on the surrounding areas they gave us plenty of great tips to keep us busy for our 2 night stay! The weather wasn’t on our side but didn’t make a difference to a great weekend. There was plenty of wildlife to sit back and watch from the cabin. The welcome hamper was also such a lovely touch and not forgetting the outdoor shower which was amazing! We would definitely love to stay again! Our advice for anyone staying; turn your phones off, take a bird book, bring bug repellent and relax 🙂

A delight...

The pod “Hedgehog Hideaway” is a delight, well equipped and with a super comfy bed and lovely bed linen. After a stroll around the lake with its butterflies, dragonflies and teeny tiny frogs, we slept so well – it was a very hot night but nice and cool in the pod. In the morning hot breakfast was delivered to our door and we enjoyed it al fresco. We spent some time with the ‘4 amigos’, the wonderful playful pigmy goats all very different characters and lots of fun. We will be back and next time hopefully the resident barn owl will put in an appearance and it will be cool enough weather wise to have the woodburner lit. Thank you Sue and Angie for a truly wonderful stay. It was great to switch off the rest of the world for a while.

A real gem...

This shepherd’s hut is a real gem – kitted out with absolutely everything you could need, and situated in a gorgeous rewilding project, with stunning views and spots to explore and appreciate the local wildlife. The whole site has been created with real thought and sensitivity to both the land and the guest experience, providing a perfect balance of comfort and off-grid living. And enormous thanks to the brilliant hosts, who really went above and beyond to make us feel at home and make our stay as easy and relaxing as possible.

Thoroughly recommend a stay

The perfect little escape into nature. Angie and Sue are the most welcoming hosts and fantastic custodians of their stunningly beautiful site. The hideaway is top level. Our highlight was sitting out each evening and watching the passing Barn Owl every night! Magic. They’ve thought of everything and the whole set up is just wonderful. Thoroughly recommend a stay.

Just fab!

If you like peace and quiet, wildlife, being in nature, wood stoves, chilling, reducing the environmental impact of your holiday, excellent accommodation and hosts, then this is the place.

Hedgehog Hideaway is in a patch of heaven, by a private lake all being managed for wildlife and conservation. The pod is just fab, luxurious, comfortable with everything provided. The welcome pack is perfect and all the eco toiletries are provided so don’t take your own.

Angie and Sue are wonderful hosts, and their animals friendly. You have to live in sync with the place, so closing gates and being careful around the animals is important. Boiling a kettle on a wood stove takes a while so patience is required but that’s part of the experience. The composting toilet and outdoor shower are the icing on the eco cake for me.

I wish I had taken socks to wear around the pod, wellie boots (heavy dews), my kelly kettle and most of all I wish I had stayed longer.

We hope to be back next year

Dear Sue and Angie,
I’d like to say thank you so much for the fabulous time that we had at Brackenwood’s Hedgehog Hideaway over the August Bank Holiday this year.  Where do we start with our praise?  The hideaway had everything we needed. The bed was lovely and comfy and a gorgeous snuggly duvet and pillows. Not a whiff of a sweaty sleeping bag in sight…Plenty of utensils and bits if we wanted to cook and all the necessities like tea and coffee and fresh milk delivered to us daily.  The egg and bacon rolls were sooo tasty, the best bacon ever and the most flavoursome and rich eggs from the lovely hens just yards away.
Loved the outdoor loo, I felt somewhat wholesome using it! The shower was super too as were the toiletries that were provided for us.  I’d use them at home. Actually, I meant to ask Angie where I can buy some.  We loved chatting to the goats, they were so sweet and entertaining as were the hens.  We didn’t see much of Cyril however….
Sue and Angie were the perfect hosts, around when we wanted them and not when we didn’t.  The location was perfect for us.  We love the beach but were not in the humdrum of a busy seaside town.  Bude wasn’t far to drive to and parking was relatively easy.
We hope to be back next year.
